In late November 2021, the Split Perspectivz team geared up for their greatest challenge to
date, the assembly and distribution of 18, 000 Builder Book imagination boxes over the
course of a month to children and families across Merseyside.
The operation took place with temporary staff and volunteers, at a site in Birkenhead where
the team built up to 1,000 boxes per day, wrapped them onto pallets and readied them for
transport to depots across the City. There was a fabulously jovial atmosphere on the
assembly line as we sang our favourite Christmas carols and built a beautiful construction
themed Christmas tree.
The activity was funded by the Department of Education, One Knowsley, LCVS, and
managed by both Knowsley and Liverpool Councils. We also contributed funds from our
own community pot, and in-kind donations from Liverpool Heartbeat Charity, New Start
Homes and the University of Liverpool and Liverpool Hope University.
Guidance and support also came from Liverpool John Moore’s University who have helped
us to look at our processes and systems, and access student graduates under the Future
Graduate Scheme.
It takes a village, and we are pleased to report that, despite paper and driver shortages
world-wide, we managed to deliver all boxes 1 week before deadline.
The feedback has been overwhelming, and we are currently taking all our findings on board,
along with comments from staff and beneficiaries, to create a bigger, better box and
accompanying workshops for 2022.
